SSC Stenographer Selection Process 2026
Unlike other SSC exams like CGL or CHSL, the Stenographer recruitment process is straightforward and does not feature a tier-based prelims/mains structure:
- Stage 1: Computer Based Test (CBT) – An objective online exam worth 200 marks. Final merit is heavily dependent on this score.
- Stage 2: Shorthand Skill Test – A qualifying exam testing your dictation and typing speeds.
Official SSC Stenographer Exam Pattern 2026 (CBT)
The online written test consists of three sections with a total of 200 multiple-choice questions. Note: There is NO Mathematics section in this exam.
Section / Subject Name | Number of Questions | Maximum Marks | Total Time Duration |
General Intelligence & Reasoning | 50 Questions | 50 Marks | 2 Hours (Composite time for the complete paper) |
General Awareness (GK/GS) | 50 Questions | 50 Marks
English Language & Comprehension | 100 Questions | 100 Marks
Total | 200 Questions | 200 Marks | 2 Hours |
⚠️ Negative Marking Update: Keep in mind that a negative marking scheme applies for every incorrect answer marked in the CBT.
Mandatory Shorthand Skill Test Criteria
Candidates who clear the cut-off marks in the CBT are called for the descriptive Shorthand Skill Test. This stage is qualifying in nature but mandatory.
- Stenographer Grade D: Dictation of 80 words per minute (wpm) for 10 minutes.
- Stenographer Grade C: Dictation of 100 words per minute (wpm) for 10 minutes.
The dictated matter must be transcribed on a computer within the officially allotted time limits (varying based on the language chosen: Hindi or English).

- Analyze Mock Tests: Attempt full-length sectional mocks to improve your speed in the Reasoning section, ensuring you save maximum time for the English comprehensive passages.
